So a couple of weeks ago I stumbled upon a short film competition to win the new Sony FS5 camera. I umm'd and ahhh'd for a few days and suddenly in a mad panic decided to go for it. What followed then was an insane 10 days of juggling chaotic work schedules, blagging, borrowing, stealing, shouting, crying, laughing and scraping together spare time to make a short film from scratch.
After a couple of days to mull over some ideas with my sister, Daniela Pasquini, through various Facetime chats and iMessages, we finally concocted up a very rough idea of what we wanted to do. From there we drew up a very sketchy storyboard and got to work planning!
We shot over 2 and half separate days. A day at the beach and a day at an office location we managed to hire for £12 an hour. Not bad for London, but we paid in other ways. Mostly in Post Production time sorting out audio! There was also that half day that we wasted by getting kicked off a private bit of land we could of sworn was public, but I'll say no more!
The film was shot entirely with the Sony A7rii and various bits of kit, my own and borrowed. Overall I'm pretty pleased with what it came out like, considering I was very close to not even bothering at all! It was a real slog (pun intended) to edit it down to the 2 minute mark but got there in the end. Another big challenge was making something without the use of music. Relying totally on dialogue and foley to tell the story was definitely not easy. Taking away that crutch really makes you realise how important subtle sounds are in immersing into the world you create. Not that i'm some kind of foley expert or anything but it was a nice problem to have in a way. Next time though, if there's any kind of budget i'm hiring a sound guy! As with any production there's always going to be shots I don't like, things I wish i'd have done differently but overall it was a really positive experience and great to work with my sister again.
Click the thumbnail below for the film, if you enjoy it, please considering sharing it. I think the competition is based on number of YouTube likes (isn't everything these days!) so every little helps, Thanks!
